Gran Melia Hotels Makes China Debut

Gran Melia Hotels and Resorts announces the expansion of its regional presence in Asia with its newest 5-star hotel, Gran Melia Shanghai, the brand's first property in China. The hotel is set to open on December 12, providing effortless access to the city's many cultural, entertainment and shopping attractions, accommodating discerning guests and business travelers from around the world.


The 686-room hotel will be located in the Lujiazui Financial & Trade Zone within the city's central Business District within walking distance to the famed Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium. The property will boast impressive views of the Huangpu River and the Puxi district and will reflect the modern and contemporary design movement of 21st century China, with a minimalist elegance, impressive high ceilings and elegant furnishings throughout.


The REDLevel, Gran Melia's premium room category, will serve as an exclusive retreat for guests seeking the ultimate VIP experience with 119 rooms, 12 suites, one Presidential Suite and one Imperial Suite. In addition to the standard deluxe amenities offered, REDLevel guests will enjoy a private check-in area, continental breakfast, complimentary happy hours with hors d'oeuvres, and access to The REDLevel Lounge -- a private space for guests to relax in privacy.


For the business and corporate group traveler, the Gran Melia Shanghai will offer a range of meeting and convention facilities, including a Grand Ballroom with a cocktail reception capacity of up to 800 people. Additionally, there will be 17 meeting rooms which can accommodate groups from 20 to 150 people. Other business-focused services and amenities include WiFi throughout the building, fully-equipped business center offering secretarial and translation services, fax and email access, as well as two additional breakout rooms for up to 10 guests.


The property will also boast four world-class dining venues including a sumptuous traditional Cantonese restaurant "Suntime Century," an elegant Spanish restaurant "El Albero," and an a la carte Italian restaurant "Acqua," along with a breakfast buffet area and international coffee shop. Additionally, guests will be able to enjoy an energetic Cuban music bar "Havana Night" and a lobby bar, as well as the destination rooftop bar, "Red Passion," which will provide stunning views of the Huangpu River and the Puxi District set in an ultra modern setting.


Gran Melia Shanghai's guests will also have exclusive access to the on-property YHI Spa, Gran Melia's signature destination retreat. Named after the "Goddess of Light," the expansive spa will be dedicated to providing superior traditionally-inspired massage and beauty treatments as well as a series of pools containing revitalizing water ritual experiences. Adjacent to the spa, a full service Health Club will provide state-of-the-art fitness equipment to visitors.

Holiday and Year End Safety & Security Suggestions

December 1st of any year marks a number of things for many of us globally, regardless of where we live. The last month of the calendar year is often time for social parties for companies and associations, as well as family gatherings. There are holiday get-togethers for department staffs, retirement celebrations and to mark the end of a (hopefully) successful year.
I like to compare the holiday season with the way a child listens to a favorite story. The pleasure is in the familiar way the story begins, the anticipation of familiar turns it takes, the familiar moments of suspense, and the familiar climax and ending.

Early December should also be a focused time of year for those of us in the hospitality world of food service, accommodations, spas/relaxation centers and beverage service. It is a time of refresher awareness in the care of alcoholic beverage service.
1. The reviews in the training of alcoholic beverages should include of course all bartenders and servers, as they are the front line of guest contact relating to consumption and service. Prudent managers also include training for additional members of staff who might meet a guest or customer who should not be permitted to drive. These staff positions include front desk, bell staff, door attendant and valet parking attendants.
2. Additional attention and consideration should be given to security levels, as they can supply a critical presence and sense of control in sensitive interactions. In recent years, incidents of overflow crowds in clubs or lounges have been cause for concern and your staff should be aware and trained on emergency evacuation. This also means management following up that all exits are clearly marked and clear, and room capacity limits are maintained.
3. While there is often a fine line on the denying a motor vehicle to its owner, there is a clear obligation to not contribute to an unsafe driver on the road who left your establishment. Training should be considered and delivered to address that challenge. Many cities and organizations have no cost or free transportation services available and your staff should be aware of local options.
4. Carefully check all electrical cords, wiring and plugs for decorative lighting or animated characters. Check the cord insulation and determine that connections between plugs and wall receptacles are all safe and in order.
5. During documented inspection tour as your decorations are put in place, check vigilantly on the stability and integrity of doors, windows, stairs, railings, balconies, the base of flag poles or any locations where decorations may be displayed, Check all areas where a rust stains are noticed, as this could be a sign of water leaks or other potential problems.
6. Make sure all decorations, hangings, wreaths, wall décor, garlands, etc. are securely fastened.
7. If you prefer or insist on live decorations in trees or wreaths, confirm with your local fire authority relating to codes and any special handling required for such items that are used indoors.
8. Be prepared for any climate challenges. If you are in a cold climate with snow clearing equipment at your property, conduct a documented thorough inspection and maintenance checklist. Be pro-active in preparing for ice storms, sleet, blizzards and sub-arctic temperatures. I know of a number of properties in my career that required additional water, food supplies, blankets, etc and preparation can be important if that is in your forecasts. Verify that you have adequate quantities of (green) treatment chemicals for ice and snowy surface and establish procedure for out-door work with proper clothing for exposed areas protection against freezing temperatures, Limit time of exposure while employees are performing out-door tasks.
9. Check and document the air intake and exhaust systems for the property, ensuring they cannot be blocked. Document a systematic safety test of the boiler or other heating system equipment, pumps, hot water delivery systems, fans, heating pipes, lines, etc. There have been cases of carbon monoxide build-ups in storage areas adjacent to indoor hotel pools that have had serious repercussions for non-attentive owners or managers.
10. Review emergency and communication systems in your community. When was the last time a representative of your property met with local police and/or fire authorities to review communication practices or to double check any special situations they might be facing? This year, many police and fire services are facing severe budget crunches and your sensitivity will be appreciated.
11. Remind cashiers to be especially alert as this is a high season for both increased potential of armed robbery and from fraud artists who attempt to pass counterfeit money or request change for large denominations in busy times that are at times confusing.
12. In a recent column titled SEASONAL SAFETY AND SECURITY REMINDERS, I offered a number of strategies on CRIME PREVENTION for ARMED ROBBERY. The full list is there but they included tips on visibility, on keeping outlet displays free from clutter, on training of staff relating to the potential and several suggestions on staffing and cash management.
13. Finally, if your property is providing a staff Holiday Party sponsored by ownership or management, care must be taken for staff as is provided to guests as outlined in #1-3 mentioned earlier. If you are hosting a holiday party for the staff, be sure there is a designated driver or other transportation alternative if alcoholic beverages are served.

Khasiat Merica Hitam

Tahukah anda bahwa merica hitam yang selama ini dikenal sebagai bumbu penyedap makanan ternyata termasuk bahan alami yang berpotensi sebagai afrodisiak.
Hal ini disebabkan kandungan piperine dalam tanaman inilah yang membuat gairah seks meningkat. Mekanismenya bekerja di area sintesa nitrit oxicide (NO) di endothelium (lapisan dalam pembuluh darah). Merica hitam dapat dikonsumsi lewat hidangan masakan sehari-hari. Nitrit oksida itu terutama memengaruhi mekanisme saat ereksi.
Namun, selain memberi khasiat positif, merica juga menimbulkan efek samping. Jika mengonsumsinya secara berlebihan jantung bisa berdebar-debar. Karena itulah, mereka yang merasa perlu tambahan gairah seksual sebaiknya tidak mengonsumsi merica hitam secara berlebihan.
Selain merica, ada satu bahan alam yang ternyata juga bisa digunakan untuk meningkatkan gairah seks. Bahan itu adalah lycorice, tapi lebih dikenal sebagai kayu legi. Sebenarnya, bahan ini sering dikonsumsi sehari-hari, tapi jarang orang mengetahui khasiatnya. Sementara, jenis tanaman ini sejak lama digunakan sebagai afrodisiak di negeri Mesir, China dan India.
Lycorice berkhasiat meningkatkan stamina. Dalam tanaman ini mengandung phytoestrogen (hormon estrogen asal tumbuhan). Hormon tersebut biasanya memperlancar peredaran darah di penis saat ereksi. Umumnya, lycorice dapat dikonsumsi melalui minuman jamu. Tapi perlu diingat bahwa kayu legi tidak sama dengan kayu manis yang biasa digunakan sebagai penyedap makanan.
Seperti bahan alam lainnya, selain khasiat, lycorice juga punya efek samping. Itu pun jika dikonsumsi secara berlebihan akan meningkatkan tekanan darah tinggi. So, bijak-bijaklah menentukan menu afrodisiak untuk memicu gairah anda.

Mengembangkan Sikap Positif

Tidak ada orang yang sepanjang karirnya tak pernah menemui hambatan. Hal yang terpenting ketika menghadapinya adalah tanamkan selalu sikap positif dalam diri untuk membantu mengatasi permasalahan dan kemunduran kerja.

Ingatlah bahwa Anda merupakan kunci utama sekaligus penanggung jawab penuh untuk membuat diri anda sukses dalam membangun karir.
Anda dapat mengadaptasi tips berikut dalam mengembangkan sikap positif Anda sendiri di tempat kerja.

1. Berikan yang terbaik untuk setiap hal yang anda lakukan. Katakan pada diri anda bahwa sesuatu yang baik memang baik. Berapa banyak pekerjaan yang bisa anda lakukan dengan lebih baik? Percayalah bahwa selama anda melakukan yang terbaik semaksimal yang anda bisa, dalam situasi tertentu, pekerjaan akan selesai dengan sendirinya.

Akan selalu ada kritik yang akan datang kepada anda. Mereka seolah lebih mengerti bagaimana caranya menyelasaikan pekerjaan itu dengan lebih baik. Mereka menyuruh anda melakukan ini itu tanpa berfikir keterbatasan yang mungkin bisa anda capai dalam bekerja.

Biarkan saja mereka. Orang-orang seperti itu sebenarnya hanya menggunakan skala perfeksionis untuk sekedar mengkritik anda.

2. Segala sesuatu yang terjadi tidak selalu seburuk yang anda kira. Sebuah penelitian menyebut bahwa hanya 4% dari kekhawatiran anda yang menjadi kenyataan. 4% tersebut biasanya merupakan kekhawatiran yang sangat kecil.

Ketika anda merasa beberapa hal berubah menjadi buruk dan anda mulai khawatir, ingat saja 4% itu. Anda lebih baik memfokuskan energi pada pekerjaan Anda.

3. Berfikir positif pada diri sendiri. Berpikir positif mungkin terdengar seperti istilah yang paling klise, namun faktanya ini akan membantu anda. Jadi pastikan anda melakukannya secara kontinyu.

Mengembangkan sikap positif di tempat kerja tidaklah mudah. Seperti segala sesuatu dalam hidup, Anda perlu berlatih. Pilih satu dari daftar ini dan ingatkan diri sendiri tentang hal itu setiap kali Anda mulai khawatir atau menghadapi tantangan.
